Self-awareness is the compass that guides human services practitioners and coaches toward authentic connection, compassionate support, and transformative change.
Cultivating self-awareness isn't just beneficial in the dynamic field of human services—it's foundational. It serves as a crucial element of coaching practices, providing practitioners with a vital lens through which to navigate the complexities of their work. As practitioners engage with diverse individuals and communities to address multifaceted social issues, the practice of self-awareness emerges as an essential tool for fostering meaningful relationships and improves the coaches ability to help participants gain self-awareness.
Understanding Self-Awareness as a Practice
Self-awareness is more than just a trait; it's an ongoing practice—a deliberate dedication to understanding and reevaluating how our values, beliefs, and mindset influence our interactions with participants. It's about meeting individuals where they are and authentically serving them, free from the biases that may cloud our perception. By delving into the origins of our thoughts, emotions, biases, and values, we cultivate a self understanding that ultimately leads to providing better support for participants.
Research and anecdotal evidence underscore the significance of self-awareness in human services. Studies, such as those published in the Journal of Social Work Education, highlight the positive correlation between self-awareness and cultural competence among social work students. Additionally, firsthand accounts from professionals in the field affirm the importance of self-reflection, feedback-seeking, and ongoing personal development in achieving better outcomes for participants. Indeed, the more you know about yourself, the more you can understand others and help them understand themselves.
To strengthen our practice of cultivating self-awareness, we can implement various strategies and techniques. Here are some effective approaches:
Reflect on the Elements of your Johari Window: Reflect on and populate your own Johari Window. It is a framework that can help increase self-awareness and our understanding of others. It is composed of four quadrants in which people can identify what they know and don’t know about themselves and what other people know or don’t know about them.
Identify your Core Values: The simplest way to define values is as a system of ideas or convictions that guide your actions. These are concepts that hold significance for you personally and define your unique identity. Becoming aware of your core values will help understand your emotions in any given situation.
Build Mindfulness Practices: Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily routine to cultivate present-moment awareness and non-judgmental observation of our thoughts and emotions. Mindfulness reflection, journaling, deep breathing exercises, and body scans can help us develop greater self-awareness.
Feedback: Seek feedback from peers, supervisors, and participants to gain insights into our blind spots and areas for growth. Use every opportunity for learning and improvement by leveraging everyday interactions. Understand that, whether you acknowledge it or not, we are constantly receiving feedback.
Continuous Learning: Invest in continuous learning opportunities, such as workshops, courses, and conferences, to expand our knowledge and enhance our skills. In this work it is important to seek out training opportunities that help you unpack your biases, values, and beliefs. The Family-Centered Coaching (FCC) Learning Journey provides useful resources towards self-awareness.

Coaching and Mentoring: Seek out coaching or mentoring from experienced professionals to explore your values, beliefs, and behaviors in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. A skilled coach or mentor can provide valuable insights and guidance on our self-awareness journey.
Peer Support Groups: Join peer support groups or communities where you can engage in open and honest conversations about shared experiences and challenges. Connecting with others who share similar goals can provide encouragement and accountability. The FCC Community of Practice is a great space to meet and connect with fellow coaches.
Cultivating self-awareness is a continuous journey. It requires ongoing commitment and mindfulness to consistently engage in reflective practices, seek feedback, pursue learning opportunities, cultivate mindfulness, utilize coaching and supervision, and participate in peer support groups. By embracing this continuous process, practitioners can deepen their understanding of themselves and others, while navigating the complexities of human services work with authenticity and compassion, ultimately leading to better outcomes for participants.
"We've been doing this work for a long time and we've learned that this is an endeavor, not an arrival. You have to continually keep it out front. As an organization, we have been really mindful and are very deliberate about how we approach things." - Melissa Hall Sommer, President, Brighton Center
